WHAT IS MAKATON

Makaton uses signs and symbols to help people communicate. It is designed to support the development of spoken language.

Makaton signs are based on the gestures used in BSL (British Sign Language – the language of the Deaf community). However, unlike BSL, Makaton signs are used in conjunction with speech at all times and in English grammatical word order.

With Makaton, children and adults can communicate using signs and symbols. Many people then drop the signs or symbols naturally at their own pace, as they develop speech. Makaton is extremely flexible as it can be personalised to the individual’s needs and used at a level that is suitable for them

School and College Sessions

Both Touch My World performing arts and Sign my world offer school/college sessions and performances. We will come to you.

In mainstream settings, Sign my World Makaton-signed sessions are a fantastic way to encourage all the children in your school to develop their Makaton signing skills. By joining in with a Sign my World session, we also hope to inspire your staff members who have already completed their Makaton training on how to refresh and apply their signing knowledge and how to reinvigorate their approach to delivering positivie communication with the children and young adults at your setting. We also hope to encourage non-signing staff to see how easy it is to apply through songs so that they feel motivated to attend their Makaton training as soon as they can.

By adopting a Makaton-based approach in your setting, you can help encourage communication between children with SEN/EAL and their peers by fostering an inclusive approach to language – signing with all the children will help you achieve this. Over and again we have seen how much the children without additional needs have loved learning how to sign as well – and what better way to break down communication barriers can there be?

We have a vast repertoire of songs ranging from nursery rhymes through to pop songs & show tunes – so we can provide sessions for all your learners from early years through to college. In SEN settings we can also adapt to bring additional sensory props to suit the needs of the learners involved in each group. Our multi-sensory approach is the perfect vehicle for learners of all abilities to practise their signing and enjoy making music together.

Concerts

Workshops for proffessionals

We can offer a range of training workshops for professionals. We have run training sessions for EYPs, SLTs, Teachers and TAs who are supporting children in either mainstream or special settings. The more professionals we can get signing, the better!

We have a range of training to offer – it could be that you are nursery/school setting and are looking to embed more Makaton into your curriculum.

You may be a setting that already has signing experience and staff have completed their Makaton training but you need some inspiration to reinvigorate everyone’s signing knowledge. Contact us for information about our singing/signing workshop which is a practical workshop to teach you how to apply your signs through our wide range of songs, games and activities. We know our lively workshops send staff away buzzing with ideas!
